The backing fabric needs to be 4-5 inches wider than the top on all sides. Example is if your top is 50x50 you backing needs to be 60x60 (minimum 58x58). There will be enough of that extra fabric if you wanted to use it for the binding.
Press the quilt top flat and take care to make sure all the seams are fully sewn.
Press the seams open to reduce bulk and improve the look and feel of the finished quilt.
If you are using a wide backing (108) sometime they have a very "deep" fold down the center. Make sure to iron that flat. If it's not ironed before quilting, that deep fold will be there forever.
Please square your quilt top and backing before you send it. This helps to make sure everything sits on the machine nice and square.
If you have to piece your backing, please make theses 1/2" inch wide instead of the standard 1/4"
If your backing has seams, and if you can, horizonatal seams are preferred. The backing rolls up better on the machine rollers. Sometimes, because of amount of fabric you have or the pattern on the fabric is specific, this is not possible, which is totally fine. I can make any seams work.
I load the quilt in this order... Roll the backing fabric on the roller, lay the batting down on top of the backing fabric then I lay the quilt top on top. This creates the quilt sandwich in which I can then quilt it all together. Feel free to bring all the pieces folded separately.
Some fabrics "shed" more than others, those threads are fine. Please cut all the thread from when you pieced the top together.
When attaching your border, measure just the quilt top in three different places on the quilt. If they are not the same, take the average and cut the border to that length. When you sew it on, incorporate or ease in any differences as you go. This will help the quilt lay flat when finished.
